People often say that defense wins championships. However, as we approach the NFL regular season and examine which team boasts the best defense, it becomes clear that we should approach this age-old adage with a degree of skepticism.

In today's NFL, the league has evolved into an offensive powerhouse. While the rules committee has commendably removed unnecessary violence from the game, it has also made the task of being a defensive back in the NFL exceptionally challenging.

The stability of a defense is far from guaranteed year after year due to frequent changes in defensive personnel. While coverage remains paramount, its unpredictable nature makes it difficult to forecast consistently.

Pass rush, on the other hand, tends to be more reliable, which is why those players often command higher salaries compared to their defensive back counterparts. However, the truly great defenses excel in both aspects. Given the volatility of defensive performance in the NFL, our best course of action, until the regular-season games commence, is to assess depth charts and consider recent history when evaluating these defensive units.
